Another shift-of-venue....this time to the center-east of Germany, near Dresden.
An area known for its rugged sandstone cliffs and very picturesque framing of the river ELBE, one of the big European waterways.
Within a stone's throw of the Czech border, too.
Very touristy for centuries and part of the former East Germany.

Also at the centre of the current European flood disaster, the Elbe busting its banks, the river-towns boarding up and buckling down.

The basement-hotel-garage flooded well over half-height with enough exxy automotive machinery submerged to make one weep.
Straight ahead the gangway to the across-the-river ferry waiting for another meter of water in the next 48hrs.

Rain and more rain, thick fog in the very narrow valleys kept the tourists down....but wasn't the most pretty setting for our 1. day (of 5) in the area.

New digs....a cute, little holiday flat in a tiny village up the sandstone mountains.

Unfortunately Pete and Goodie bypassed the famous bridge in Dresden, so we got no close looks from the scene. :(
Because the eastern part of the bridge was in a bent form they decided to bring it down before the flood.

What looks like an exhibition for excavators was the race to clear most of the debris before the flood. Where the excavators were is now the river Elbe.

Spent some of yesterday about 50k's upstream from the bridge collapse at Bad Schandau, a spa-town on the banks of the Elbe river.
Even the smaller feeders, creeks,/ small rivers etc are overflowing all over the place.
Weather stabilized a fair bit today, some grey/murky sunshine and dry all day. A week of 25C on the radar.

Local TV with yesterday's shots around Bad Schandau

Early start to catch the first Kirnitzsch-Valley Tram (say that with a mouthful of peanutbutter-on-toast) of the day, pouring rain or not.
The valley Terminus at Lichtenhainer Falls.

The bike manufacturers of today could learn a lot from that dash...KISS rules.

60-year flashback.... a cluster of the old bottle-shaped ceramic electrical fuses

Things are TIGHT along the valley floor...the tram runs it's 8 or 10km on the narrow road, tracks are part of the roadbed.

Batten down the hatches....the river's coming

P1090814.JPG

IMG_20240916_094040.jpg

Tight squeeze, with a narrow market place, the church, the main road and the shire offices all vying for the narrow strip of dirt between the river bank and the foot of the cliffs.

Afternoon....typical local building style with external timber post+beam frame for the lower story, then a lighter timber frame with mud+straw packing/ filler, hip-roofs

For something else in the afternoon...a quick stop at Tillig HQ, one of the prime euro model-train manufacturers....in this tucked away tiny town 50m from the Czech border.
Then hopped across the border for some early bbq-dinner.
